10 On-line Music Resources that Rock!

Bookmark and Share

Across the often baron landscape of the WWW there are gems of undiscovered musical communities and resources which only the coolest of music bods and server scavengers know about. That was until now! Below you’ll find what I we think are the top ten music resources available on-line today. This list is all you’ll ever need to ensure you never loose a single “music off” with anyone, ever. Because that’s bad, and not bad meaning good.

1. Shazam - I remember when this service came out. Basically you ring 2580 and point your phone at a speaker playing a tune you don’t know. 30 seconds later you get a text telling you what tune it is. I’d love to go into it more but that’s as simple as it is! Shazam have developed since the early days and now include apps for everything, which by all accounts work well. The way it works by the way involves some complex algo trickery which matches sets of high end frequencies. How that still works through a phone is beyond me!

2. Allmusic - So, someone’s told you something a bit far fetched like Cypress Hill have all really gone insane in the brain or that Sting has never actually been to New York, and you want to check it out, well this is the place to go! In fact, I’ve just searched for a few artists who I thought weren’t that well known and they had pages… see for yourself.

3. Daz Smith’s Music Business Resources - This is a great site for anyone who wants to know how the music business works in a nutshell. There’s enough information on this site for you to get a full and concise insight into “the biz.”

4. Internet Archive - Music & Arts - This Internet Archive category lists a shed load of music from the public domain as well as expired copyright tracks. Along side this you get a healthy selection of free contemporary music. Find an unknown track and spread the word!

5. Bandbuzz - This is the place for discovering unknown bands and getting your own tracks out there as well. Want to get behind a group from the very start? Then this is the starting line.

6. Broadcast Law Blog - Broadcast Lawyer and Attorney, Davis Wright, has a great blog for all you illegal down-loaders and file sharers to stay glued to. All the latest top cat music industry short comings and screw ups! A must for the law breakers, although at Mixm8 we obviously don’t condone anything of that nature.

7. Tunefind - Heard a tune on an advert? Someone else piping on about a tune on a TV programme? Well this is the place to slay your woes! Tune Find helps you locate individual tracks from popular TV programmes and films.

8. The Hype Machine - This is a great blog aggregator which focuses purely on music related blog posts and citations. It updates constantly as well, so you’ve no excuse for not keeping up to date with all the movers and shakers in the music world.

9. ProjectOpus - Project Opus is a site which aims to help unknown local talent get a foothold on that oh so slippery ladder to success, an admiral cause is ever there was one! This is another great site for being the first on a scene when a new act breaks through.

10. MusicPortl - Music Portal is an absolute peach of a site for finding out information about any artist from any period in time. It’s basically an aggregator of all the main sources of musical information on the web, but all displayed in an easy to use way.

If you should be unfortunate enough to find yourself battling some “know it all” in the Mixm8 arena, get your teeth into some of those sites . There’s enough information on that little collection to stump even the most intimidating of fanatics!

Lu-ego.
